Welcome to Washington, D.C. and a brief overview of the nation's capital city that lies within and completely covers the District of Columbia. Washington is the only American city or town that is not part of a state.

Washington, D.C. is located in the southeastern United States close to the east coast. It is surrounded by the state of Maryland and is bordered on the west by the Potomac River which runs in a northwest to southeasterly direction. Virginia lies across the Potomac River. Though sometimes associated with Washington, D.C., Arlington National Cemetery and the Pentagon are located across the Potomac River in Virginia.
